The days are getting longer, the sun is showing its face more often, and before you know it, your dog will be sprawled out in a sunbeam as if it's his full-time job ☀️
Wonderful, but also a season where you need to be just a bit more conscious when it comes to your four-legged friend.
Because while we grab an ice cream and seek out a shady spot, your dog is completely dependent on you to stay cool, comfortable, and safe.
Heat? For your dog, it feels just a bit different
Dogs are much less able to release heat than we are. They don't sweat like we do, but mainly get rid of their heat through panting and their paws. This means they overheat faster, without you always realizing it immediately.
A happy, energetic dog can suddenly become sluggish, react slower, or pant excessively: subtle signs that you want to take seriously.
Walking, but smartly
Those sunny afternoon walks? Put them on hold.
Instead, opt for early mornings or late evenings, when the ground is still cool. Asphalt can become deceptively hot, and your dog will feel that directly on their paws, potentially even causing burns.
In doubt? Place your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. Too hot for you = too hot for your dog.
Shade & rest stops
Ensure there's always a spot where your dog can escape the sun. At home, but also on the go. Taking a break in the shade is not a luxury, but a necessity.
And honestly… those quiet moments together are often the nicest ones.
Hydration is key
Always have fresh water within reach.
Take a bottle with you on the go, or even better: make it a small ritual. Stop, drink, then continue together.
Be careful with cars (even “just for a moment”)
We'll say it again:
a car quickly turns into an oven. Even with a window open. Even if you're only gone for "a very short time."
JUST DON'T DO IT.
Summer-proof, but comfortable
Choose light, breathable materials. No heavy, warm items, but accessories that move with your dog without stifling them. Comfort is everything, especially when it's hot.
Tip: a 'cooling' bandana
Listen to your dog
Perhaps the most important one of all.
Not every dog wants long walks in the heat. And that's okay. Sometimes a short round + chilling out together is exactly what's needed.
Summer isn't about doing more, but about enjoying time together, at a pace that feels good 🐾
